Zurich Cloud Migration Strategy

Cloud Enablement
Technology Strategy

Zurich Insurance engaged SevTech to define a strategic Cloud Migration Framework for moving 59 critical applications from a legacy London data centre to a modern multi-cloud environment across AWS and Azure. Through detailed assessments, stakeholder workshops, and a structured roadmap, SevTech created a clear, risk-mitigated plan that aligned with Zurich’s business objectives, IT governance, and long-term cloud strategy.

Overview

Zurich Insurance partnered with SevTech to define a comprehensive Cloud Migration Strategy, enabling the transition of critical applications from a legacy London-based data center to a multi-cloud environment leveraging AWS and Azure.

SevTech conducted in-depth assessments, facilitated workshops with key stakeholders, and developed a structured roadmap to ensure a smooth and risk-mitigated migration. The strategy aimed to optimise cloud adoption while aligning with Zurich’s business objectives, IT governance, and operational needs.

Challenge

Zurich needed a structured and strategic approach to migrate 59 critical applications to the cloud while maintaining operational resilience. Key challenges included:

  • Selecting the optimal cloud provider for each application.

  • Ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.

  • Managing dependencies between cloud and on-premise applications.

  • Aligning with Zurich’s global IT governance, security, and compliance standards.

Results

  • Phased Migration Plan: A structured, risk-mitigated approach for transitioning applications.

  • Optimised Cloud: Partnering AWS and Azure alignment based on application needs.

  • Robust Governance Model: Defined roles and responsibilities across Zurich, DXC, and CCOE.

  • Future-Proofing IT Infrastructure: A scalable cloud strategy supporting Zurich’s long-term digital transformation.

Solution

SevTech conducted in-depth assessments of Zurich’s application landscape, evaluating each application’s suitability for AWS or Azure. A four-phase migration approach was defined, starting with pilot applications and progressing to more critical systems.

The strategy incorporated a tailored operating model, a governance framework, and a clear RACI structure, ensuring seamless execution while aligning with Zurich’s Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCOE) and DXC, its managed service provider.
